Obituary for Henry Stratton

Henry  Stratton
Henry Stratton, 84, of Robbinsville, NC and recently of Greenville, SC, left this world to be with the the Lord on the afternoon of Monday, January 8, 2018, He passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

Henry was a resident of Graham County, NC for most of his life and was born to the late Perry Urquart and Maudie Stratton Urquart. When Henry was 9 days old, his mother died and he was then raised by his late maternal grandparents, John and Hattie Deyton Stratton. More commonly known to the community as “Babe” Stratton, he was proud of his multi-generational roots in Graham County.

Henry is preceded in death by siblings Harley Stratton, Mae Turpin, Lona Smith, Effie Carringer, Cora Lee Sneed, and a beloved son, Steven M. Stratton. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, 3 adult children, 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

After serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, Henry returned to the States and married Mary Jo (Palmer) Stratton in 1956. Together they had 4 children: Debra Rochelle (Joseph) of Lenoir, NC; Patricia Owens (Barry, deceased) of Robbinsville, NC; Steven Stratton , deceased, (Regina) of Robbinsville, NC; and Michael Stratton (Teresa) of Greenville, SC.

His surviving grandchildren include: Brandon Smith (Christine), Clayton, NC; Douglas Underwood, Robbinsville, NC; Matthew Rochelle, Wilmington, NC; Sara Stratton Harkins (Adam), Robbinsville, NC; Mary Jean Stratton, Greenville, SC; Taylor Owens, Robbinsville, NC; Emmlie Owens, Wilmington, NC; Hayden Owens, Robbinsville, NC; Caroline Stratton, Greenville, SC and John Michael Stratton, Greenville, SC.

Additionally, Henry leaves behind 5 great-grandchildren Grayson and Sawyer Smith of Clayton, NC, Zeb Underwood of Robbinsville, NC, Matthew and Zllah Underwood of Greenville, SC, NC, brother/sister-in-law Max and Carolyn Cook of Sylva, NC, brother-in-law Billy Palmer of Murphy, NC and multiple nieces and nephews.

Henry was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and gardening. When able he was always busy with multiple hobbies - woodworking, raising quail and chickens, being entertained by his dogs and reading religious books and his bible. He loved a good Western. Henry’s priorities in life were his love for the Lord, his wife, his family and his country. He could be counted on to give his honest opinion whether or not it was popular. His main desire was that all those he loved would come to know and love the Lord.

For years, Henry was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Pastor David Anderson, Robbinsville, NC, and more recently he had joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, Pastor Joel Logan, Greenville, SC. Henry loved his church families and trusted, admired and appreciated his Pastors who were present and steadfast through many good times and many trials. The Family also expresses deep gratitude for the lovingkindness shown by these two Pastors.

The Family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church, 41 Airport Rd, Robbinsville, NC from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Thursday, January the 11th. A funeral service officiated by Pastor David Anderson will immediately follow at 2:30pm . Burial will take place at Lone Oak Cemetery after the service. Palmetto Mortuary of Greenville, SC is in charge of the arrangements.
