Verner “Sonny” Ross Jr, 77, of Greer, SC passed away peacefully at his residence on January 21, 2018.

Mr. Ross was born in Monroe, NC to the late Verner and Evelyn Ross. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, friend and coach. Sonny grew up in Greenville, SC and graduated from Greenville High School in 1958 and attended Presbyterian College. Many of his summers growing up, he spent as a counselor at the Elk’s Camp in Cedar Mountain, NC.

Later in life, he earned his education degree from the University of South Carolina and then taught high school history.

He worked at several places over the years, but he loved coaching basketball at North High School best. It was there he made a big impact on his students and players. They always knew Coach Ross believed in them.

Sonny loved coaching basketball, watching Gamecock football games, Boston Red Sox games and spending time with his family and friends. He was a kind man who was often mischievous and could always make you smile and laugh.

Mr. Ross is survived by: his daughters Melissa Ross Taylor and husband Jeff of Charlotte and Patricia Ross Brett and husband Charles of Dallas, TX, Jessica Ross of Aiken, SC. His sister Mary Sue Key and husband Jack. His brothers Bob Ross and wife Gail and Doug Ross and wife June, all from the Greenville and Greer areas. He had six beautiful grandchildren and lots of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be Friday January 26, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Covenant United Methodist Church in Greer, SC.

The Ross family would like to thank his caregivers at Interim Hospice, Heidi Monroe and Carrie Hudson for the amazing and loving care they provided Sonny.
