Obituary for Bobbie Schmauch (Anders)

Bobbie Schmauch (Anders)
Bobbie Anders Schmauch, 97, of Bracken Road, Piedmont, peacefully and quietly passed from this world to the next, Friday, August 17, 2018 after a brief illness. She was at home with her family.

She and her twin sister, June Anders Taylor, were born May 1, 1921, in Hendersonville, NC and were two of the nine children of Otto and Pearl Kimball Anders. Bobbie married Donald Joe Schmauch, Sr., September 21, 1947 in Hendersonville, NC.

In 1939, at just eighteen Bobbie received a pilot's license and flew her own plane. She enjoyed "buzzing" her hometown of Hendersonville, NC. It's been said she would fly so close to homes of family and friends that she could watch them brush their teeth. An avid sports woman, she was an award winning golfer, participating and winning several tournaments in the Charleston, SC area. During WWII, Bobbie worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. With her sisters, cousins and a sister-in-law, she was a member of one of the first women's basketball teams and her family was well known for performing water skiing tricks and pyramid building on Lake Greenwood, SC. A creative business woman, she and her husband Joe, established the Augusta Road Marine Sales from which she retired at age 85.

Blessed with a dry wit and sense of humor, Bobbie was quick to laugh and quick to share that laughter. She loved life and conveyed a powerful sense of family and place. Her favorite pastime was cutting the grass, which she did often and with pleasure.

At the age of 95, Bobbie wanted to, "Go up one more time". A young pilot, Shannon, took her up and as they were talking, Shannon thanked Bobbie for being such an inspiration to her and other women pilots. Mid-way through the flight, Shannon raised both hands and said "it's hers, she's flying the plane".

She is survived by her four children, Joe (Diane) Schmauch, Jr., Bobbie "Sis" (George) Jordan, Tony (Susan) Schmauch and Margie "Toot" Evett (Scott Frisby); nine grandchildren, Kim (Dewayne), Laurie, Cal (Beth), B.J., Margie (Clint), Joey, Jeff (Joy), Jason (Julia), and J.D (Pam); eight great-grandchildren, Campbell, Morgan, Grace, George, Alex, Eli, David and Lillian; two sisters-in-law, Frankie Anders and Jean Blevins as well was many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, her eight brothers and sisters and a son-in-law, Jarrett Evett. Bobbie's passing truly marked the end of an era. She is most beloved by so many and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Bobbie's life and Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Greenville Jet Center, 1 Aviation Lane, Greenville, SC, Hanger #1. Interment will be a private event for immediate family members.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wounded Warriors and A'gape Hospice.
