Joan Carolyn  Purvine
Joan Carolyn Brown Purvine, 81, of Simpsonville, SC, passed away at her home on September 27, 2018, after a long illness. Her funeral will be held at Palmetto Mortuary, 1017 Mauldin Road, Greenville, SC at 2 pm, Saturday September 29, 2018. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC.

Ms. Purvine was born on March 8, 1937, a daughter of Mack Manly Brown and Bessie Holcomb Brown Davis. She was educated in the public schools of Greenville County, South Carolina and was graduated from Buncombe County Schools, Asheville, North Carolina. She was a graduate of the National School of Aeronautics, the National Fire Association Of Fire and Casualty Insurance School (was an Ambassador to the College of Insurance), Greenville Technical College with an Associate of Arts degree in Management and Marketing, and the Institute of Certified Travel Agents with a designation of Certified Travel Counselor.

Her career journey began as a reservationist/ticket counter agent for Southern Airways. During the 13 years that she was employed at Real Estate, Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, she became a licensed real estate agent and a licensed insurance agent for the state of South Carolina. After her children started school, she became a volunteer coordinator in the area office of Greenville County Schools and also served as the coordinator of the Adopt-A-School project. She was later employed as a leisure agent for Rich’s Travel (Greenville, SC) and then served as the agency’s office manager for 8 years. She was promoted to Regional Manager of Corporate Development and Regional Manager of 3 years. She was promoted to Regional Manager of Corporate Development and Regional Manager of 3 Rich’s Travel locations. Becoming an owner of her own travel agency was realized when she opened Palmetto Travel in Greer and enjoyed that experience until she retired.

Ms. Purvine was recognized with many honors and achievements. She was awarded the South Carolina PTA Honorary Life Membership and the National PTA Honorary life Membership for outstanding service to school and community.

She was recognized as “Outstanding Volunteer” by for different groups: the South Carolina School Boards Association, the Greenville County Board of Trustees, the South Carolina Heart Association two times, and the Hillcrest Memorial Hospital.

She held many positions in PTA at the local unit, district and state levels and served as president of the South Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc., from 1977-1979.
She also served as a vice president of the Pleasantburg Seroma Club.

She served as a South Carolina notary public for 30 years. She is listed in Personalities of the South and The World Who’s Who of Women.

Ms. Purvine is survived by her brother Mack Brown (Elaine) of Fountain Inn, SC; family members, Linda Busha and Marion Dixon of Colorado and North Carolina respectively and Lottie Brown, Hollywood Florida; nephews, Steve Brown (Summer) and children, Fountain Inn, SC; Robert Brown (Erin and children, Clarksville, Tennessee; Phil Prifold (Esmaraldo), and Paul Maddalena; nieces, Kathy Brown Creswell (Ken) and family, Fountain Inn, SC; and Lisa Prifold Giuliano (Jonathan).

Ms. Purvine is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Pichard Brown and Robert Brown; her sister, Shirley Praml; her children, Gina, Todd, and Rick Purvine,and Floyd Purvine.

Thanks to Griswold Home Care and their care and their caring staff for the wonderful care in keeping Joan at home. Thanks especially to Kelly McKinney for being her companion for two years.
