Obituary for Ellison DuRant Smith III

Ellison DuRant Smith III
Ellison DuRant Smith, III, 80, passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2018 in Greenville, SC. He is survived by his son Ellison and daughter-in-law Christine, his daughters Adelia and Laura, his brother Charles Saxon Farley Smith, Jr., and 7 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter Louise and mother and father Laura Douglas and Charles Saxon Farley Smith. Ellison grew up at Tanglewood Plantation in Lynchburg, South Carolina. He is the grandson of former Senator Ellison DuRant Smith.

He moved to Greenville, SC in 1968 and founded Caper House convenience stores. After having success and failure at building companies, he discovered his true happiness was connecting with people. He drew great strength from reading the Bible and sharing his favorite readings with others.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Magnolia Place of Greenville and The McCall Hospice House for their compassion and care.

The family will have a private celebration of his life at Tanglewood Plantation, and a memorial marker will be placed at his family gravesite in St. Luke’s Cemetery, Bishopville, SC.

Donations in his memory may be made to Magnolia Place of Greenville.
