Obituary for Hywel Thomas Morse

Hywel Thomas Morse
Hywel Thomas Morse, 51, of Greenville, passed into Glory on 19th October, 2018, where he was reunited with his two children, Tomos and Carys, and his father, Aldwyn Thomas. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Jana, and his son Timothy. Hywel was born in South Wales, UK, on 4th July, a date he always felt was auspicious after coming to the USA, as the whole country celebrated his birthday with enormous fireworks displays.

Hywel qualified as a chemical engineer at Loughborough University, England. He was fluent in five languages and and spent time in Europe facilitating collaboration between Italian and German research and development. He was posted to Duncan, South Carolina, where he met Jana Malsam at a Bible Study. Jana and Hywel shared an unwavering Christian faith. They married in 1996, and had three children, Tomos, Timothy, and Carys. After his birth Tomos was discovered to have significant physical anomalies, and Hywel devoted himself to his care. Timothy was born a very bouncy baby boy two years later. Carys was born 5 years after Tomos with what was finally diagnosed as a vanishingly rare genetic condition known as Vici Syndrome, and both Tomos and Carys went to be with the Lord at the age of eight. Surviving son Timothy is a healthy, strapping student studying computer science at Clemson University.

Hywel and Jana attended North Hills Community Church when his health allowed exposure to crowds. He made many devoted friends, especially in the internet and local wargaming communities. Borderlands Comics and Games was his favorite haunt, and his legacy lingers there. He was known for his expertise in painting wargaming miniatures in exquisite detail as well as his knack for battle strategy and tactics. He was diagnosed with Leukaemia in December 2009. He fought the disease with the same determination and strategy he applied to all battles, and he and Jana were grateful for the medical treatment and support he received from Greenville Hospital System Cancer Center. He fought tirelessly without complaint or self pity, even when among those with whom he was closest. He and Jana participated in the Dragon Boat Races and the Challenge to Conquer Cancer bicycle rides from Greenville to Texas and Greenville to Maine to raise funds for rehabilitation therapy for people recovering from cancer treatment. He will be remembered by all who knew him, particularly those whom he tried to feed salsa on eggs for breakfast.
