Obituary for Catherine Elmes
Catherine Shafto Elmes, "Miss Cat", 89, born March 25, 1930, went home to her Lord and Saviour on June 25, 2019. She is survived by her daughter Lynne C. Elmes.
She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Harold B. (Tiny) Elmes, their three babies, her parents Steadman and Mabel Shafto, 4 precious aunts and 1 uncle and their spouses, and her in-laws including Lois I. Elmes.
Born on the Jersey Shore, she was a graduate of Neptune High School, NJ, class of '48, and enjoyed the many reunions including the 60th. She grew up attending the First Baptist Church of Asbury Park, NJ. Both gave her lifelong friends. If you ever spent time with "The Girls", you have many stories and enjoyed much laughter.
She spent her married years in Brockport, NY, first working in payroll at General Electric, then raising a family. She was known for making fruitcakes that people actually wanted to eat. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, bowling, and eating ice cream. She loved her German Shepherds.
As she grew older, she went from playing sports to watching or listening. Nascar, football, golf, and MLB. She loved to wear her Chipper Jones, Javy Lopez, or Jeff Gordon t-shirts. She attended some Atlanta Braves games and watched every game on TV along with the Cubs, Dodgers, and Yankees. The MLB channel was made for her.
Since moving to SC, in the late '90's, she was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Simpsonville. Besides her daughter, they were her family and for most of those years, she was blessed by Pastor William Cole and his family. She was unable to attend in recent years with the current Pastor, Stephen Cox. She was also blessed with great neighbors, Jason and Shannon King.
If you have not done so, she invites all to accept the Lord, Jesus Christ as their personal saviour and be assured of eternity in heaven. Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Bible Baptist Church Building fund (Simpsonville), to Faith Baptist Church (Laurens), or to Meals on Wheels of Greenville. A memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date.
