Obituary for Michael Cornel Green

Michael today we celebrate you!!

Born Michael Cornel Green, December 14, 1947 in Harlem, NY.   Michael grew up with the love of his mother who he loved and adored. He shared the same admiration for his sister Carol aka Cake who affectionately called him "Bubby” throughout his life. During Michael’s journey through childhood he loved sports; football, basketball, and swimming.   After graduating high school, he tried numerous occupations but decided to join the United States Army. While in the Army he was stationed in Germany, he got married, and of that union two beautiful children, Richard and Michelle Green were born.  Michael's journey took him in many directions, but lastly, he married his longtime companion of 38 years, Zelma. These two shared a "special" kind of love. Michael’s step-children loved him dearly and called him Papa Michael, it was a second name because his sister's children called him Uncle Mike.

After his stay in Germany, Mike returned to the United States where he held different positions in the Brooklyn, NY VA hospital as a Pharmacy Technician, and Supervisor of Inventory Management. He later also became a Greyhound Bus Operator in New York. Mike’s journey through life took him to Virginia where he worked with the Postal Service and his final career as a Correction Officer in Greenville Correctional Facility where he retired.

During his careers and in the military, he received many awards and recognitions. Mike loved to tinker, he loved building and rebuilding old cars and was taken aback by all Sci-Fi movies, which kept him totally captivated. Mike loved joking but let us not forget how he enjoyed smoking his Kool’s on the back patio.

Unfortunately, 3 years ago Michael started the battle of his life, which he sadly succumbed to on Sunday, July 14, 2019. Mike was loved by everyone and will be truly missed. We know this is not goodbye but see you later.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Fanny Green and his beloved dog Quequeez. Michael is survived by his wife, Zelma Green, sister Carolyn Boyette (Hardy aka Bo) son, Richard Green (Lawanda), Daughter, Michelle Green (Desmond) stepsons, Lynelle Barrett (Resa), David Heron (Monique), and Redd Barrett, and stepdaughter, Zatarsha Barrett. Michael also leaves to cherish his memory 18 grandchildren (4 grandpups), 5 great-grands, four nieces and nephews, numerous grand nieces and nephews who love him immensely and a host of family and friends.  Michael will be missed more than anyone could ever say. With all our love his family.
